Melbourne radio host Marty Sheargold has faced backlash for disparaging remarks about the Matildas and women’s sports made during his show on Triple M. The controversy erupted after former Hockeyroos player Rosie Malone shared an audio clip of Sheargold’s comments on her TikTok on Tuesday.
During his Monday broadcast, shortly after the Australian women’s football team was defeated 2-1 by the USA in the SheBelieves Cup, Sheargold launched into a rant questioning the team’s dynamics. He compared the Matildas to “Year 10 girls,” referencing cliques and perceived infighting within the team. His derogatory comments about the team and women’s sport included, “Now I’m sorry to undermine the whole sport, but that’s what I think.”
Following the broadcast, Sheargold’s comments prompted widespread disappointment and outrage, especially as Malone indicated on social media that younger listeners might be affected. She stated, “I was in disbelief… I’m sure many of [the young girls] would have been hurt and confused.”
In response to the uproar, Sheargold apologised, acknowledging that his humour might have been misinterpreted and expressing regret for any offence caused. He stated, “Any comedy, including mine, can miss the mark sometimes.” Triple M also released a statement distancing itself from Sheargold’s remarks, reaffirming its support for all sports, both men’s and women’s.
Malone’s clip quickly gained traction online, with many users urging Triple M to take further action against Sheargold, highlighting that such views should not be normalised in mainstream media. The situation underscores ongoing conversations around the treatment of women’s sports in Australian society and the responsibilities of those in influential positions.
