A Melbourne-based doctor, Associate Professor Andrew Kornberg, is embarking on a solo flight across Australia in a light aircraft to raise over $4 million for children suffering from rare diseases. Over a span of 25 days, he will cover approximately 27,000 kilometres, making 20 stops along the way.

Kornberg reflected on the challenges of his journey, stating, “Flying day in, day out is tough, but it pales in comparison to what our children and families endure.” His ambitious fundraising effort aims to establish a specialised treatment centre at the Royal Children’s Hospital, which is projected to cost $4.5 million. This facility is envisioned to accommodate dedicated staff, beds, and infrastructure to address the pressing need for targeted resources in pediatric care.

Highlighting the importance of this initiative, Kornberg emphasised the necessity of providing hope for children with rare conditions: “We’ve got to look after our children. We’ve got to ensure that there’s hope. This is the hope I’m trying to bring.” This flight is not Kornberg’s first venture into aviation for charity; it marks the second time he has taken to the skies in pursuit of funds for sick children.

The initiative has already garnered support from parents of affected children, who underscore the importance of enhanced access to specialised treatments. Kornberg’s journey combines his dual passions for aviation and paediatric healthcare in a noble cause aimed at improving the lives of vulnerable young patients.
