A Melbourne academic has been charged following an incident where child sex abuse images were reportedly displayed during a university lecture. The 70-year-old man, residing in Middle Park, faces one count of possessing child abuse material under Commonwealth law and two counts under the Crimes Act.
The charges arose from an event on February 5, when police allege the inappropriate images were unintentionally shown during the lecture at a university located in Melbourne’s central business district. This incident prompted a police investigation, leading to a search warrant being executed at the man’s home, where multiple electronic devices were confiscated.
Further investigations saw detectives travel to Sydney, accompanied by NSW Police, to execute a search at another property on February 13. Authorities are currently examining additional electronic devices found in the eastern suburbs of Sydney.
After being interviewed by police, the 70-year-old has been formally charged and is scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on August 7. As of now, law enforcement officials have stated that they are not seeking any other individuals in connection with this case.
