Mohammad Saleh, a Palestinian refugee who founded the first surf lifesaving club in Gaza, reflects on the enduring dreams of his people to return home, especially following comments from former US President Donald Trump regarding control of the region. After escaping Gaza in May and establishing a community Nippers program, Saleh faced the tragic consequences of the conflict that erupted after the October 7 attacks. He lost about 10% of his team, including four children aged between six and twelve, who were killed during airstrikes.
Despite the devastation, Saleh expresses hope and determination, noting that many in Gaza strive to improve their community. He remembers training with the North Steyne Surf Lifesaving Club in Sydney before returning to create a positive impact through sport. As he now speaks from Australia, Saleh emphasises that Palestinians deserve the right to return to their homeland, highlighting the intrinsic connection his people have with their land. He stresses that the Palestinian issue extends beyond real estate; it encompasses a historical and emotional return for those displaced. Saleh believes that coexistence is possible in Palestine for people of all beliefs, reiterating that the dream of returning home remains deeply rooted in the hearts of all Palestinians.
