A measles alert has been issued by NSW Health following the visit of an infectious individual to several locations in western Sydney. The individual recently returned from South-East Asia, where measles outbreaks continue to occur in countries such as Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia.

The identified venues include Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology in Rouse Hill and Soul Pattinson Chemist at the Rouse Hill Village Centre, where the individual was present on Friday, as well as the emergency department waiting room at Norwest Private Hospital on Sunday.

Measles is highly contagious and can spread through the air via coughs and sneezes. Dr Catherine Bateman, Director of Public Health for the Western Sydney Local Health District, reassured the public that there is no ongoing risk at the aforementioned locations. However, individuals who were at these sites during the relevant times should monitor themselves for any symptoms.

Dr Bateman outlined the common symptoms of measles, which include fever, runny nose, sore eyes, and cough, typically followed by a red, blotchy rash that often begins on the head or face before spreading. Those who suspect they may have been infected are advised to contact their GP or local emergency department in advance, to prevent potential exposure to others.

The specific times and locations of concern are as follows:
– Douglass Hanly Moir Pathology, Adelphi Street Rouse Hill: Friday, February 21, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
– Soul Pattinson Chemist, Rouse Hill Village Centre, Adelphi Street: Friday, February 21, from 2:30 PM to 3:30 PM.
– Norwest Private Hospital Emergency Department waiting room: Sunday, February 23, from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM.

Public vigilance is essential, and anyone experiencing symptoms should act responsibly by seeking medical advice promptly.
