A health warning has been issued in Queensland following the visit of an individual infected with measles to various tourist venues, transit stations, and other locations across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, and the Sunshine Coast. The adult, who had recently returned from overseas, was contagious during their outings, which included popular attractions like Australia Zoo, a mini-golf venue, and several shops and hostels last week.

According to the Metro North Public Health Unit, the individual was unaware of their infectious status while travelling around these areas from April 2 to April 5, 2025. Locations visited during this period included restaurants, stores, and public transport hubs, raising concerns about potential measles exposure to others.

Notable sites and corresponding visit times are as follows:

  • Yo-chi at Surfers Paradise on April 2, from 10:15 am to 11 am.
  • Cotton On and Ghanda Clothing at Surfers Paradise on April 2, from 11 am to 12:30 pm.
  • Holey Moley Mini Golf, from 2:15 pm to 3:45 pm on April 2.
  • Bunk Hostel in Surfers Paradise, from April 2 through April 3 until 10 am.
  • Goldies on April 2, from 6:45 pm to 8 pm.
  • Additional locations in Fortitude Valley and Brisbane on April 3, including further sessions at Bunk Hostel and the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital on April 4.
  • On April 4, travel on trains from Brisbane to Beerwah Station and a visit to Australia Zoo between 8:30 am and 5 pm also occurred.

Health officials are urging anyone who may have been at these locations during the specified times to monitor for measles symptoms for a period of 18 days post-exposure. Symptoms generally manifest within 7 to 18 days after infection and may begin with fever, fatigue, cough, and a runny nose, followed by a distinctive red, blotchy rash that typically starts on the face.

Dr Alexandra Uren, a public health officer, advises that anyone suspecting they may have measles should contact their healthcare provider prior to visiting, so necessary precautions can be put in place to prevent further transmission of the virus.
