Measles cases in Australia, which saw historic lows during the COVID-19 pandemic, are now climbing again as the virus resurfaces globally. Although endemic measles was eliminated in Australia in 2014, outbreaks still occur, primarily linked to infections acquired abroad. Notably, the last year with over 60 recorded cases was 2019.

Globally, measles is regaining ground, with notable outbreaks reported in popular travel destinations for Australians such as the US, Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam, as well as in countries like Yemen, Pakistan, India, Ethiopia, Romania, and Afghanistan.

As of 2025, there have been several reported measles cases within Australia, particularly in New South Wales and Victoria, where 13 cases each have been documented in the first quarter of the year. Additionally, Western Australia has recorded at least two cases, including one associated with a large public event.

While vaccination is an effective preventative measure, it is important to note that individuals who have received two doses of the measles vaccine can still contract the disease, albeit with milder symptoms. The combination measles vaccine is generally administered to children at 12 and 18 months and is free under the National Immunisation Program. In certain situations, such as travel, infants as young as six months can be vaccinated.

Symptoms typically appear seven to 18 days post-infection, starting with flu-like signs and culminating in a distinctive, non-itchy rash that often begins on the face or neck. Severe complications can include pneumonia, ear infections, and brain inflammation.

Despite the elimination of endemic measles, several limited outbreaks have taken place since 2014, often sparked by returning travelers who contract the virus overseas. In recent years, the number of measles cases has fluctuated significantly, with just 25 cases reported in 2020 and zero in 2021, followed by 7, 26, and 57 cases in subsequent years.

To remain informed about measles and associated health alerts, residents are encouraged to follow updates from their state’s Department of Health websites, ensuring they have accurate and timely information on the situation.
