Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has expressed his confusion regarding the club’s decision to extend coach Brad Scott’s contract prematurely. According to a report by Tom Morris on Nine’s Footy Classified, Scott, who is already under contract until 2026, is poised for an extension through to 2027.
During the segment, Lloyd questioned the necessity of this move, stating, "I wouldn’t have extended him now. There’s no need for it. Why?" He suggested that the club should assess Scott’s performance and the team’s outcomes over the course of the current season before considering any contract extension. Lloyd pointed out that with Scott already contracted for the following year, there appeared to be no urgency to make such a decision now.
Lloyd speculated that if Essendon anticipated a disappointing season and believed Scott would face significant scrutiny, it might explain the timeliness of the extension. Nonetheless, he remained unconvinced of its rationale.
Morris added insights into Scott’s situation, noting that the club has entrusted him with significant influence over team direction, indicating a desire for him to shape the Bombers as he sees fit. It’s also noteworthy that Scott has brought along several former North Melbourne staff members since taking over.
Scott assumed the role of head coach at Essendon in September 2022, following the dismissal of Ben Rutten. Since his appointment, the Bombers have struggled, failing to reach finals since 2021 and haven’t secured a postseason victory in over 20 years. The upcoming 2025 season will begin with a match against Hawthorn at the MCG on Friday night.
