Emily van Egmond has expressed her support for Sam Kerr to continue as captain of the Australian national team despite calls for her resignation. Kerr has rejoined the Matildas for training for the first time in over a year, as the team prepares for two matches against South Korea this week.

The 31-year-old’s comeback follows a tumultuous period, including her recent arrest in London. Former Socceroos player Robbie Slater publicly urged Kerr to step down from her leadership role, suggesting it would demonstrate her commitment to the team and help rebuild trust with fans. Kerr was acquitted of racially aggravated harassment charges following a trial in February, and both her club Chelsea and Football Australia have opted not to impose sanctions.

While some remain sceptical about her reinstatement as captain, van Egmond, who is currently serving as vice-captain, stands firmly behind Kerr. “She definitely should not be stepping down,” van Egmond stated, emphasising that the Federation has addressed the situation adequately and that the team continues to support Kerr wholeheartedly.

Kerr has been sidelined from international play since January 2024 due to an ACL injury but is expected to return to club competition with Chelsea soon. Van Egmond shared that Kerr’s spirits are high and that she is excited to reconnect with her teammates, noting the positive atmosphere within the squad.

Kerr is slated to attend and support the Matildas during their match against South Korea on Friday at Allianz Stadium, reinforcing her commitment to the team during this pivotal time. Van Egmond highlighted Kerr’s team-first mentality, underscoring the collective positivity surrounding her return as the Matildas look forward to their upcoming games.
