In a recent encounter, Newcastle Knights’ star Jesse Southwell faced a significant challenge during the opening half against the Wests Tigers, although her team ultimately secured a decisive 30-6 victory.

Late in the second period, with the Knights ahead by 10-6, Southwell committed to a play deep within the line. After making a pass, she was struck hard by Montana Clifford, leaving her on the ground as the game continued. Following a forward pass, the ball rolled away from play, drawing attention back to the fallen halfback.

Allana Ferguson, commenting on the incident for Nine, noted that Southwell had relaxed after releasing the ball, which led to a clean and powerful rib shot. Despite the impact, no penalty was awarded; Ruan Sims described the timing of the tackle as “near perfect.”

Ferguson further highlighted that while the hit was substantial, it wasn’t late or illegal, praising it as a well-timed tackle. She acknowledged Southwell’s aggressive playing style, commenting on her bravery in consistently probing the defence, which may have made her more vulnerable to such tackles.

After receiving medical treatment, Southwell was able to return to the game, demonstrating her resilience. Earlier in the match, Sheridan Gallagher was instrumental for the Knights, scoring two tries, while Emily Bass registered a try for the Tigers, leaving the halftime score at 10-6.

The second half saw a dominant performance from Newcastle, who added 20 points to their tally with tries from Sienna Yeo, Tess Staines, and Evah McEwen, the latter scoring twice late in the match.

Overall, this clash showcased not only the intensity of the competition but also the courage displayed by players like Southwell, despite the risks involved in the physical nature of the game.
