The Matildas celebrated a triumphant clean sweep in their friendlies held in Newcastle, securing a 2-0 victory over Korea Republic. This result builds essential momentum as they prepare for the upcoming Asian Cup scheduled for March next year. Having previously achieved a 1-0 win at Allianz Stadium, the Matildas showcased their strength with goals from Mary Fowler and Kaitlyn Torpey, the latter’s effort being deflected off Lim Seon-joo.

With star player Sam Kerr sidelined, these two friendlies provided an invaluable opportunity for the team to refine their tactics before the Asian tournament. Caitlin Foord, who made a significant impact as a substitute during the second half, acknowledged that both teams will likely experience changes over the next year.

Reflecting on the games, Foord remarked on the current developmental phase, stating, “It’s early days; the tournament’s a few months away, and teams are building, figuring out what strategies work best.” She highlighted that neither Australia nor South Korea would resemble the teams seen during these friendlies when the tournament arrives.

The opening moments of the match saw the Matildas start hesitantly, while Korea Republic squandered their first two chances. A concerning clash occurred between teammates Tameka Yallop and Alanna Kennedy, who sustained injuries but continued to play. Mary Fowler eventually broke the deadlock with a well-placed right-footed shot following a poised first touch.

Fowler continued to shine, assisting in creating chances for Foord, whose three attempted shots were blocked before Torpey found the net in the 63rd minute with a low strike. Just minutes before the end, Korea Republic looked set to equalise with a goal from debutant Yoo-Jin Ko, but it was disallowed for offside, allowing the Matildas to maintain their clean sheet.

Fowler’s ability to adapt to her role on the field was evident, as she played in a position familiar from her club experience. She expressed satisfaction in contributing consistently within the national team setup.

Overall, the matches served as a crucial testing ground as the Matildas continue to build towards their Asian Cup campaign, making the most of the opportunity to face a competitive Asian opponent.
