A police pursuit early this morning in Sydney concluded with a man, sought for alleged domestic violence offences, fighting for his life in hospital. The event initiated around 5am when officers approached a red Mazda hatchback parked along the Great Western Highway in Bowenfels. Instead of stopping, the driver sped away, prompting a search by police.

After two hours, officers located the Mazda on Werriway Street in South Littleton. During the chase, the vehicle was reported to have rammed into a police car and attempted to drive at an officer, though no injuries were reported. Pursuits ensued towards the Bells Line of Road but were called off due to dangerous driving conditions.

Tracking the Mazda to Penrith, police deployed spike strips on Castlereagh and Cranebrook Road. However, the Mazda continued until it collided with a Toyota SUV, a Sprinter van, and a Hyundai. In the aftermath, the 33-year-old driver was ejected from his car and apprehended short distance away, suffering serious head injuries. He was subsequently transported to Westmead Hospital in critical condition.

Further investigations revealed that the man was wanted on two outstanding warrants related to domestic violence. While the driver of the SUV sustained minor injuries, the other involved parties were treated by paramedics and found unhurt.

A crime scene has been established, and a critical incident investigation has been launched, which will undergo an independent review by the Professional Standards Command, under the oversight of the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.

Support services are available for those affected by domestic violence through the National Sexual Assault, Domestic and Family Violence Counselling Service at 1800RESPECT (1800 737 732).
