A man is currently recuperating in a hospital following a perilous first date that took a dramatic turn in the Glasshouse Mountains, Queensland. The couple had embarked on a romantic Easter hike, attempting to free climb the rock face, when tragedy struck. The 27-year-old man slipped, plummeting approximately 30 metres down Mt Beerwah, leading to a substantial emergency response that unfolded before his date.

What began as a picturesque outing quickly escalated into a life-threatening situation. Queensland Fire Department representative Luke Champman described the fall as significant, stressing the potential severity of the injuries sustained. Emergency crews rapidly mobilised, equipped with climbing gear, to undertake the daunting task of rescuing the fallen climber.

The man was discovered unresponsive at the base of the cliff, suffering from severe head and pelvic injuries. As Jeff Bradfield from Queensland Ambulance Services noted, the hiker’s survival was fortunate under the circumstances. Rescuers efficiently worked to package the patient for evacuation, coordinating efforts with Queensland Ambulance Services to prepare him for a helicopter winching.

Witnesses to the incident included a group of army reserves on a training exercise, who immediately rushed to provide first aid and relay vital location information to the emergency teams. Meanwhile, the man’s date assisted first responders during the rescue, demonstrating remarkable composure amid the chaos.

Following the successful extraction, the man was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where he remains in a stable condition, receiving treatment for his injuries while likely dealing with the emotional toll of the harrowing incident. His date stands by him, perhaps reflecting on how their outing took an unexpected and dramatic twist, from what could have been a charming romantic adventure.
