Victoria Police has issued a clearer image of a man suspected of involvement in an arson incident that resulted in the death of 27-year-old Katie Tangey in Melbourne. At the time of the tragedy, Tangey was housesitting for her brother while he was on his honeymoon. Police have characterised her as “completely innocent,” emphasising she had no connection to any illicit activities.
The released image comes from enhanced CCTV footage believed to relate to the fire that engulfed a home on Dover Street in Truganina. Witnesses saw a dark-coloured vehicle, potentially a BMW X3 or X5, close to the scene shortly before the fire erupted around 2am. Two men were reportedly seen inside the vehicle prior to the explosion, with security footage capturing them fleeing the area, one potentially carrying a jerry can.
Emergency services received a call from Tangey at 2.30am, where she indicated she was trapped inside the burning home. Detective Inspector Chris Murray described this incident as one of the most tragic he has encountered in his 38 years of service. He reflected on the horror of her last moments, highlighting how she had her entire life ahead of her and had only begun housesitting that night.
In light of the tragedy, police have urged the public for information about the man in the image and the car involved. Inspector Murray implored anyone who recognises the suspect or has further details to come forward. Encouragingly, police have been receiving tips through Crimestoppers, indicating that the case is progressing. They are aware that conversations are taking place, with some members of the community providing critical information, including a tip related to a nickname associated with a person of interest.
As the investigation continues, police remain hopeful that further insights will emerge, leading to accountability for this devastating incident.
