Victoria Police are actively seeking a man following a homophobic attack on a same-sex couple aboard a train in Melbourne. The incident occurred on February 9 at approximately 4:30 PM when a 30-year-old man and his partner boarded a city-bound train at Glen Waverley Railway Station.
As the train reached Syndal Railway Station, the couple was approached by a man who allegedly hurled homophobic slurs at them. While the boyfriend exited the train, the situation escalated, resulting in the assailant physically assaulting the 30-year-old before departing at Mount Waverley Railway Station.
The accused is described as a Caucasian male, aged between 35 and 45, with a slim build and shoulder-length brown hair, standing around 183 cm tall. At the time of the assault, he was seen wearing a grey Puma shirt and black cargo pants, and he was carrying a black backpack.
In response to the attack, police have released a photograph of the man they believe could provide assistance in the investigation. They are appealing to the public for any information or video footage related to the incident via Crime Stoppers.
Victoria Police condemned the act, stating that there is “absolutely no place at all for degrading and homophobic behaviour in our community,” expressing disappointment that such incidents continue to occur. The police reaffirmed their commitment to the safety and welfare of LGBTIQA+ communities and emphasised their dedication to fostering trust and improving relations within these communities.
