An investigation has commenced following an incident in which police shot a man in Gosnells, a suburb of Perth, after he reportedly lunged at them with a knife. The situation unfolded on Wilsey Street around 5:40 PM local time when officers responded to a report of an alleged robbery that had occurred earlier in the day.
Upon arrival, authorities found a man in his 40s armed with a knife. Attempts to negotiate with him were made, but he refused to disarm. Instead, he advanced toward the officers in a threatening manner. In an effort to de-escalate the situation, an officer deployed a Taser, which temporarily incapacitated the man, yet he still retained the knife.
The confrontation escalated when the man lunged at the officers, prompting one of them to discharge a firearm. The man was subsequently transported to Royal Perth Hospital with serious injuries from gunshot wounds.
WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch stated that he had reviewed body-worn camera footage and expressed confidence in the actions taken by the officers involved, describing their response as commendable despite the distressing circumstances. He acknowledged the unfortunate nature of the event for all parties involved.
A witness at the scene recounted seeing two police officers and the man on the ground, with officers persistently urging the man to put his hands up. Concerned for her elderly mother, a nearby resident decided to retreat indoors to ensure her safety amidst the chaotic situation unfolding outside.
The investigation will seek to clarify the details surrounding the incident and the police response.
