Heavy rainfall continues to pummel flood-affected regions in north and far-north Queensland, prompting the federal government to approve additional financial assistance for those impacted. The Disaster Recovery Allowance will offer up to 13 weeks of income support for residents who have lost their jobs or income, particularly in the Burdekin, Cassowary Coast, Hinchinbrook, Townsville, and Palm Island areas.
Federal Emergency Management Minister Jenny McAllister confirmed that help is being mobilised swiftly, including sending 300 emergency personnel to assist and improve food access in the region. During this emerging crisis, two fatalities have been reported, with search operations ongoing to locate a missing man in Ingham.
The local infrastructure is struggling, with road damage and water supply issues affecting many. However, Premier David Crisafulli reassured residents of ongoing support and restoration efforts, including power and water supply restoration, as well as plans to rebuild destroyed infrastructure. As authorities focus on recovery, the Bureau of Meteorology warns of upcoming severe storms and continued flood risks, advising communities to remain vigilant. Despite the devastation, the strength and resilience of Queenslanders are being highlighted as they cope with one of the worst flooding events in recent history.
