A one-year-old girl is currently recovering after a shocking incident in which she was thrown down a garbage chute in Staten Island, New York. The event occurred on Monday afternoon, prompting a swift response from local police following a 911 call made by the child’s father at approximately 3:15 PM. Officers arrived at an apartment building located at 195 Steuben Street and discovered the girl suffering from minor abrasions to her torso.

Emergency services transported the child to Richmond University Hospital, where she has since stabilised and is expected to make a full recovery. A 39-year-old man, identified as her uncle, has been taken into custody; however, no charges have been filed against him as of yet.

An NYPD officer was seen at the scene, notably near the open door of the family’s apartment, while neighbours expressed their shock and disbelief at the incident. Milton Franklin, a resident of the building, conveyed his feelings of helplessness, stating, “I’m lost for words right now… a baby down a garbage chute is just… absolutely mindboggling.” He recounted witnessing emergency crews at the scene and a distraught woman carrying the injured child to an ambulance, prompting him to pray for the family’s healing during this difficult time.

Another neighbour, Froylan Zapata, shared his sentiments about the disturbing nature of the event, saying it left him feeling depressed and concerned about the capacity for such actions in society.

The investigation continues as authorities piece together the circumstances surrounding this distressing case.
