Emergency services were alerted around 2.45pm today to a situation involving two swimmers in danger at Zenith Beach, situated near Shoal Bay in Port Stephens. Friends of the individuals managed to rescue them from the water prior to the arrival of local police and bystanders, who commenced CPR on both men.

Tragically, one of the men was unable to be revived and was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man remains in critical condition and is undergoing treatment on the beach. While the two men have not officially been named, they are reported to be in their twenties.

It is important to note that Zenith Beach, located within the popular Tomaree National Park, does not have surf lifesavers on duty.
