A tragic incident occurred on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula when a 69-year-old pedestrian from Hastings was struck by an e-bike travelling at an alleged speed of 80 km/h while he was crossing the road. The collision happened around 7pm on Frankston-Flinders Road, as the man was returning from grocery shopping. He sustained critical injuries and was airlifted to Royal Melbourne Hospital, where he sadly passed away later that afternoon.

The e-bike rider, a 24-year-old Hastings man, also suffered injuries and was taken to The Alfred Hospital. Police reported that the e-bike had been extensively modified, including the addition of extra batteries, and was held together with duct tape and cable ties, leading to serious safety concerns. Major Collision Investigation Unit inspector Craig McEvoy emphasised that riding at speeds of 80-90 km/h on a bike is perilous, endangering both the rider and the community.

The rider, known to law enforcement, remains in hospital and has yet to be interviewed. Inspector McEvoy noted that due to the dangerous modifications and reckless decisions made by the rider, he faces serious charges following this event, which resulted in the loss of a life. He stressed that any bicycle exceeding 25 km/h falls under motorcycle regulations, requiring proper registration, licensing, safety gear, lighting, and helmets.

This tragic event comes during National Road Safety Week, prompting police to urge all riders to prioritise safety. Inspector McEvoy advised that individuals should fully understand the rules and regulations governing e-bike modifications, as such guidelines are vital for protecting both the rider and the public.
