A man has died and another is in custody following a tense police standoff in Tamworth, north-east New South Wales. Emergency services responded around 4.30pm after concerns for a man’s wellbeing were raised. Upon their arrival, they found a 47-year-old man suffering from critical head injuries and a 55-year-old man allegedly armed with a knife.
The armed individual barricaded himself in a bedroom before subsequently climbing onto the roof of the residence. Efforts by police negotiators to persuade him to come down were ongoing when he fell from the roof. Paramedics treated the man for stab wounds to his chest, and he was transported to Tamworth Base Hospital in serious condition under police supervision.
Tragically, the injured 47-year-old was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital. Authorities believe the two men were acquainted, and a crime scene has been established for further investigation, with assistance from the State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad. The situation, which escalated quickly, has raised questions regarding the circumstances leading to the confrontation.
