A man has been charged in connection with the fatal shooting of a police officer in Tasmania but did not enter a plea during his court appearance. The incident involves Constable Keith Smith, who tragically lost his life on June 16 while serving a court-mandated repossession notice at a rural property in North Motton.
Leigh Geoffrey Sushames, aged 46 and the property’s resident, faces multiple charges, including murder, attempted murder, and aggravated assault. During a video link appearance at the Launceston Magistrates Court, Sushames remained silent regarding the charges and has been remanded in custody. He is scheduled to return to court on August 11.
Constable Smith, 57, was reportedly shot shortly after arriving at the property with another officer and two individuals involved in the repossession process. Following the shooting, officers stationed at the property’s driveway responded by wounding Sushames in the hand, leading to his surrender.
A dedicated member of the Tasmanian Police for 25 years, Constable Smith is being remembered fondly by his family and colleagues. Both his wife and daughter expressed pride in his career, describing him as their protector and a respected figure in the community known for being the “good cop”.
This incident marks the first fatal shooting of a police officer in Tasmania in over a century. Investigations are being conducted by police professional standards and the coroner to look into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
The community mourns the loss of a committed officer who served with honour and distinction.
