A 53-year-old inmate was discovered unresponsive in a cell at the Silverwater Correctional Complex in western Sydney at approximately 4:50 PM today. Despite the efforts of Corrective Services staff and paramedics, they were unable to revive him.
In a separate incident, the body of 19-year-old Audrey Griffin was found partly submerged in Erina Creek on the New South Wales Central Coast on March 24, initially labelled as a drowning by authorities. Following the discovery, there were no immediate signs of foul play. However, this changed when a tip-off from the public prompted a homicide investigation.
Authorities have since launched a media appeal seeking information, sharing a photograph that allegedly depicts a man named Torrens near Hotel Gosford during the early hours after Griffin left her friends, around 2 AM, on her way to Terrigal.
Police believe that Torrens, who allegedly had no previous connection to Griffin, may have followed her from the pub before assaulting her, leading to her drowning. DNA evidence was reportedly found under Griffin’s fingernails, and a witness claimed to have heard a high-pitched scream in the vicinity around 3 AM. Consequentially, Torrens was arrested and charged with Griffin’s murder. This turn of events has left her family, friends, and the community in shock.
Originally from Milsons Point in Sydney, Torrens was scheduled to appear in court in June. Nonetheless, the circumstances surrounding his death are currently not considered suspicious by police, who are now preparing a report for the coroner.
