A 53-year-old man was found deceased in his cell at Silverwater Correctional Complex in western Sydney around 4.50 pm yesterday. Despite efforts from Corrective Services staff and paramedics, they were unable to revive him.
In related news, the death of 19-year-old Audrey Griffin was initially classified as a drowning after her body was found partly submerged in Erina Creek on the Central Coast of New South Wales on March 24. However, following a public tip-off, authorities launched a homicide investigation when they found no evidence of suspicious circumstances at first.
Police recently appealed for information and released a photo showing a man named Torrens near Hotel Gosford at the time Griffin left her friends to walk towards Terrigal around 2 am. Investigators believe Torrens might have followed Griffin from the pub, assaulted her, and that her drowning was an unfortunate consequence of the altercation.
DNA evidence linking Torrens to Griffin was found under her fingernails, and a witness reported hearing a high-pitched scream around 3 am. Following these findings, Torrens was arrested and charged with her murder, shocking her family, friends, and the broader community.
Originally slated to return to court in June, Torrens was found dead, prompting an investigation. Authorities have stated they do not consider his death suspicious and will provide a report to the coroner.
