A man has been charged following a dramatic car chase in Melbourne’s south-east involving an axe. The incident occurred around 10am when police pursued an allegedly stolen Audi A1 through suburban areas including Chadstone, Mount Waverley, Mulgrave, and Malvern.
The stolen vehicle was reportedly abandoned in Malvern East, after which the suspect switched to a Toyota RAV4 parked on George Street. The pursuit intensified as police units, including the Police Air Wing, tracked the second vehicle. The Toyota was eventually cornered on John Street and crashed into a fence.
Following the collision, the driver attempted to flee on foot but was apprehended approximately one kilometre away on Broadman Street. Inside the stolen Toyota, police discovered several weapons, including an axe and a screwdriver.
The arrested individual, a 29-year-old man without a fixed address, now faces multiple charges, including two counts of motor vehicle theft, drug driving, weapons offences, and dealing with the proceeds of crime. He is scheduled to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court later today.
