A 29-year-old Tongan man, currently awaiting deportation due to visa violations, has been charged with recklessly wounding a security officer at the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. The incident occurred yesterday when the man allegedly used a makeshift weapon to injure the officer, as stated by the Australian Federal Police. He was apprehended by NSW Police and subsequently taken to Bankstown Police Station, where the case was referred to the AFP.
The charge of reckless wounding holds a potential maximum penalty of seven years. Following the incident, the officer received initial medical attention at the detention facility before being transported to Auburn Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and later discharged.
The accused has been denied bail and is scheduled to appear in Bankstown Local Court today.
