An Adelaide man, Robert Branch, has been arrested following a series of abusive phone calls to police, allegedly making 251 calls within an eight-hour period. The 45-year-old is said to have dialled the police assistance line, 131 444, approximately every two minutes from 4:45 PM to 1:00 AM, significantly disrupting police operations intended to assist those in genuine need.

Branch was apprehended at his home and faces charges for using a carriage service in a way that is harassing or offensive. If convicted, he may face a prison sentence. Police Minister Stephen Mullighan condemned the actions as “the worst type of idiotic, unthinking behaviour.”

Prior to his arrest, Branch had posted videos online from previous visits to police stations, although the current allegations are unrelated to those earlier encounters. During a court hearing, Branch expressed his frustration, claiming that “police are out of control,” before being remanded in custody.

Mullighan highlighted the seriousness of the charges, noting that they carry significant penalties that should deter others from similar foolish behaviour. A bail hearing for Branch is set to take place next week.
