AFL chief Andrew Dillon has issued a caution to players, including Bailey Smith, regarding their use of social media, following Smith’s recent Instagram comments hinting at illicit drug use after the upcoming grand final. Although Smith has deleted the comments and apologised, Dillon emphasised the importance of players being aware of their roles as public figures and the implications of their online behaviour.

Dillon articulated the need for players to be particularly careful about their actions on social platforms, as they are continuously under public scrutiny. He remarked, “Illicit drug use is a serious issue and should not be trivialised,” while making it clear that the player’s actions were not condoned. Dillon confirmed that the AFL is discussing the situation with the Geelong Football Club and Smith to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Meanwhile, Paul Marsh, the outgoing chief of the AFL Players’ Association, acknowledged the need for players to express their individuality while reiterating his disapproval of Smith’s comments. He described Smith as a refreshing presence in the AFL, suggesting that his remarks, although poorly timed, were perhaps intended in jest. Marsh shared his belief that while the comment was inappropriate, it should not overshadow Smith’s personality or impact on the sport.

These statements come during a time of discussions surrounding the AFL’s updated illicit drugs policy, further highlighting the league’s commitment to addressing this sensitive issue. Additionally, the AFL recently announced an increase in the injury fund for retired players, a move that aims to support those facing challenges post-football, with contributions from current players boosting the fund from $24 million to $54 million.
