Two AFL matches in Queensland have been postponed due to the impending threat of Cyclone Alfred. The season opener featuring Brisbane against Geelong and the match between Gold Coast and Essendon have both been cancelled, as initially reported by Nine’s Tom Morris.

AFL Chief Executive Andrew Dillon confirmed the postponements, prioritising the safety and health of individuals in cyclone-affected areas. He stressed the uncertainty surrounding the weather conditions, expressing concern for the residents of southeast Queensland and northern NSW who may be impacted. Dillon remarked that although they hope for a favourable outcome regarding the cyclone, it was essential for everyone to prepare adequately. He wanted to ensure that the games would not distract anyone from these preparations.

Dillon highlighted the importance of making a timely decision to provide clarity to clubs and fans amid the uncertainty, allowing those involved with the matches—from players to coaching staff and spectators—more time to secure their homes and available community resources if necessary. He extended his gratitude to the clubs, broadcasters, venues, and supporters for their understanding during this challenging time.

The AFL is yet to announce rescheduled dates for the affected matches, stating that they would provide updates as soon as they have more information. Dillon is expected to address the media further on Tuesday afternoon regarding the situation.

The season now will kick off on Friday night with a match between last year’s grand finalists, Sydney and Hawthorn, followed by another game on Sunday featuring the Giants against Collingwood. All supporters in Queensland are encouraged to heed the advice of state government authorities in their cyclone preparations.
