A significant police investigation is underway following social media threats directed at the Australian Islamic House Masjid Mosque in Edmonson Park, western Sydney. The mosque received alarming comments on an Instagram post referencing the tragic 2019 Christchurch mosque shooting in New Zealand.
NSW Premier Chris Minns expressed his distress over the situation, especially as the Muslim community engages in prayer during Ramadan. He affirmed that both the state government and NSW Police are taking the threats very seriously, emphasising that racism and Islamophobia have no place in society and will be addressed with strict legal action.
The mosque’s leadership has reported the comments to the police and is cooperating fully with authorities to ensure the safety and security of their community. Australian Islamic House president, Mazhar Hadid OAM, conveyed their deep concern over the threats and stressed the need for their community to feel safe, like all citizens in Australia. He called upon authorities to treat these threats with urgency and to protect all places of worship from hatred and violence, urging the public to remain vigilant and united against Islamophobia.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also condemned the threats, labelling them abhorrent and reaffirming that such actions have no place in Australia. He voiced his support for the authorities as they investigate the threats, insisting that those responsible must face severe consequences for their actions.
While police noted there is no ongoing threat to the community, investigations have indicated that the source of the threat may be from outside New South Wales.
