Michael Maguire is feeling the heat after the Brisbane Broncos faced their third consecutive defeat, losing 30-26 to the St George Illawarra Dragons at Suncorp Stadium. The Broncos were expected to recover against a struggling Dragons side, especially after taking an early lead thanks to Ezra Mam’s return. However, the game took a turn in the second half, during which the Dragons scored four tries, including two while Broncos player Jaydn Su’A was sidelined for a professional foul.
In the post-match press conference, a visibly disappointed Maguire, alongside captain Adam Reynolds, expressed frustration at his team’s inconsistency. He characterised the Broncos as a “Jekyll and Hyde” side, capable of brilliance but also prone to lapses. Maguire acknowledged that improvements are necessary, and while he has his thoughts on the team’s situation, he intends to keep them internal for now. He reminded that there is still a long season ahead and a break could provide time to reassess.
Reynolds cited a lack of concentration as the reason for the team’s second-half collapse, dismissing claims that they were fatigued due to Maguire’s training methods. The head coach also faced queries regarding Martin Taupau, who might be released from the club after publicly liking a critical Instagram post about Maguire.
Maguire acknowledged the complexities within the club but underscored the players’ responsibility to focus on their performance. Despite the loss, Mam’s return was a highlight, as he contributed significantly with one try and three assists, and Maguire noted his potential to develop further alongside Reynolds.
Next, the Broncos will take a break before facing the Sea Eagles in round 13, hoping to regroup and regain their form after a tumultuous spell.
