A significant earthquake struck at 8:24 am local time (6:24 am AEDT) with a depth of 9 kilometres, located around 10 kilometres south of Seddon. GeoNet classified the tremor as strong, and it was promptly reported by over 1,200 individuals shortly after it occurred.

The effects of the quake were felt widely, extending from Rakaia in the south to Palmerston North in the north of the North Island. One eyewitness situated six floors above ground described the experience as “a good shake.”
