A couple from Western Australia, Lydia and Wehan, embarked on an adventurous journey across Australia, hoping to re-enter the property market after four years on the road. Upon returning to Perth, they were met with disheartening housing prices, with the median price climbing to around $1.3 million — double what they had previously paid for their home. Faced with this reality, the couple decided against a large mortgage and instead transformed a government-owned patient transport van into their mobile home, investing around $50,800 for the conversion.

Having sold their former home, Lydia and Wehan aimed to realise their dream of travel and adventure. The pair, who live very frugally, managed to sustain their lifestyle on just $64 a day during a notable 595-day expedition. Most of their expenses revolved around fuel and insurance. Initially, they had saved in hopes of buying another home, but the soaring prices quickly dashed those plans. In total, they spent $20,220 on the van at an auction, with Wehan crafting a cosy abode complete with modern amenities like plumbing, a compost toilet, and a kitchen.

Both individuals now work remotely, Lydia in digital marketing and Wehan in engineering, which supports their nomadic lifestyle while allowing them to explore different regions of Australia. Their experiences on the road revealed a rising trend among younger individuals and families adopting a nomadic life, often due to the unaffordability of housing.

Lydia and Wehan’s current lifestyle is flexible, and they have set their sights on eventually settling in Tasmania, which they fell in love with during a previous visit. They plan to travel at a leisurely pace, allowing them to immerse themselves in each stop along the way, even spending significant time at favourite campsites.

Their journey highlights a growing phenomenon in Australia where many aspire to live an adventurous life on the road, adapting their careers to facilitate this lifestyle, amid challenging property market conditions. With no pressing reasons to return to a conventional lifestyle, the couple’s story resonates with many who face similar housing challenges and desire more freedom.
