Two-time major champion Angel Cabrera is poised to make his return to the Masters tournament next month, following a two-year prison sentence for domestic violence. The Argentine golfer was apprehended by Brazilian authorities in 2021 due to offences committed in Argentina, leading to convictions for threats and harassment against an ex-girlfriend. Additional legal actions were taken by another former partner.
As of 2023, Cabrera has been released on parole, expressing to Golf Digest his profound embarrassment over his past conduct. Now at 55 years old, he is officially listed as one of the former champions eligible to participate in the upcoming Masters at Augusta National. Traditionally, past champions receive invitations each year, though between 2021 and 2024, Cabrera’s name appeared on the list as a “past champion not playing.” There is some uncertainty regarding previous invitations, with reports indicating he lacked the necessary visa for the 2024 tournament. However, the chairman of Augusta National has confirmed that he would be welcomed back once those issues were resolved.
Cabrera’s anticipated return has garnered support from fellow golfer Ben Crenshaw, who hosts the annual champions dinner at the Masters. Crenshaw has reportedly expressed enthusiasm about Cabrera’s presence, deeming it “great to have Angel back.”
The 2009 Masters winner, known as “El Pato,” also seized victory at the 2007 US Open. In 2024, he competed in 12 events within the PGA Tour Champions circuit and has already participated in a couple of additional tournaments this year. His last appearance on the PGA Tour was in 2019.
Reflecting on the tumultuous years of his life, Cabrera admitted, “I am repentant and embarrassed. I made serious mistakes. I refused to listen and did what I wanted, when I wanted. That was wrong.” He conveyed his longing to return to the Masters, stating it is his “dream” to walk the course that holds so much significance for him.
The 2024 Masters tournament is scheduled to take place from April 10 to 13, where American golfer Scottie Scheffler will defend his title.
