Australian tennis legend Lleyton Hewitt has faced a two-week suspension and a hefty $30,000 fine from the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) due to what has been deemed “offensive conduct” towards an anti-doping volunteer aged 60. This ruling means that Hewitt, who is the captain of Australia’s Davis Cup team, will not participate in any tennis-related activities, including his coaching responsibilities.

The issue arose after Australia’s Davis Cup semi-final loss to Italy in Malaga, Spain, on November 23, 2024. The ITIA took action against Hewitt following an independent tribunal’s examination, which included video footage, witness accounts, and interviews. The tribunal concluded that Hewitt had indeed pushed the anti-doping official, contradicting his claims of acting in self-defence.

Despite his denial of the allegations, asserting that his actions were a response to provocation, the tribunal, led by chair Michael Heron KC, found that Hewitt’s conduct was neither “reasonable nor proportionate.” This decision has led to a temporary but significant setback for the former world number one, who now finds himself sidelined from his important roles in Australian tennis.

As the tennis community absorbs this development, many are watching closely for any further statements or repercussions.
