On the eve of the one-year anniversary of a tragic incident at Westfield Bondi Junction, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese paid homage to the six victims who lost their lives. The victims were 25-year-old Dawn Singleton, 27-year-old Yixuan Cheng, 30-year-old Faraz Tahir, 38-year-old Ashlee Good, 47-year-old Jade Young, and 55-year-old Pikria Darchia. In a heartfelt video address, Albanese urged the nation to reflect on the lives tragically cut short on what should have been an ordinary Saturday.

Albanese emphasised the importance of remembering not only the victims themselves but also the hopes and dreams they had for the future. He expressed that their absence is keenly felt within their families, friendships, and communities, highlighting the enduring pain for those left behind. “As we mourn, we acknowledge the ongoing grief experienced by those who awaken each day to the weight of this loss,” he stated, extending his thoughts to all who witnessed or were affected by the day’s events.

The Prime Minister noted that the attack was Australia’s deadliest since early 2017 and captured the response of the public, with citizens showing remarkable courage in the face of horror. Many rushed in to assist during the chaos, reflecting a spirit of compassion amid the turmoil. The act of violence, met with heroic efforts, revealed the best of human nature as people supported one another, offering aid and comfort in their darkest hours.

Albanese concluded his address by affirming that the memories of those lost will endure, residing in the love they generated and the lives they influenced. He encouraged everyone to honour the victims both on the anniversary and every day moving forward. As part of the commemoration, NSW Premier Chris Minns, along with local authorities and representatives from the Scentre Group (owners of Westfield), will gather at Bondi Junction the following day. Floral tributes will be laid at memorial boards situated in Oxford Street Mall to remember and honour the victims and their legacy.
