Darling Downs Zoo owner Steve Robinson addressed the media today as the zoo reopened its doors to visitors, following an incident that left his sister-in-law, a teacher from New South Wales in her 50s, needing medical attention after a lioness attack. Although she has been a long-time supporter of the zoo, contributing as its photographer for over two decades, she was unfortunately unable to participate in interviews due to her ongoing recovery.

Robinson detailed how both his wife, Stephanie, and a carnivore keeper were present when the incident occurred, providing immediate first aid. A leather belt was used to fashion a tourniquet, and a thermal blanket was quickly secured around her until local paramedics arrived on-site promptly.

The attack did not occur in the primary lion enclosure but rather when the woman was near the lions’ holding pen, which was being cleaned at the time. Robinson mentioned that this was an unprecedented event for the zoo, emphasising that the lion had never shown aggression before and he believed it was merely playing. Having raised the lions themselves, he asserted that their temperaments are normally excellent, allowing interactions through the enclosure’s mesh.

The atmosphere remains heavy as zoo staff are still grappling with the traumatic incident. Robinson expressed their difficulties in processing the event and considering its implications moving forward, particularly for the victim, whose life has been significantly altered.

As a precaution, the zoo has temporarily suspended its public lion encounters in light of the situation. The victim remains in stable condition at the hospital but is yet to be well enough for an interview. An investigation is currently underway by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
