Ex-Cyclone Alfred’s impact has significantly affected several communities, reaching as far north as the Fraser Coast in Queensland, where an astonishing amount of rain fell in a short time. Residents awoke to severe flash flooding, necessitating rescues from both homes and vehicles in this popular tourist region.

Located approximately 250 kilometres north of Brisbane, the Fraser Coast experienced an unprecedented downpour of 230 millimetres in just three hours, a stark contrast to the typical monthly average of 130 millimetres observed between December and March. This deluge led to extensive flooding, inundating homes and submerging main thoroughfares, including Torquay Road.

Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour noted that the storm warnings prior to the event did not include Hervey Bay, yet the area faced dire conditions. Flash floods overwhelmed vehicles, with reports of a ute driving with water levels nearly up to its windows. Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelepy reported numerous emergency responses, including interventions for individuals at risk of drowning, with police attending to 35 incidents, including 14 life-threatening situations.

Rescue efforts saw seven vehicles needing assistance, while evacuations involved nine homes. Even the local police station was affected, with authorities declaring an emergency. The community, while some floodwaters began to recede, remained cautious as severe weather alerts continued through the night. Commissioner Chelepy advised residents to seek shelter due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.

Premier David Crisafulli reassured affected residents that the government would stand by the Hervey Bay community during these challenging times, emphasising support as they navigate the aftermath of this unprecedented weather event.
