Andrew Hastie, the Shadow Home Affairs Minister, has dismissed “misleading” claims regarding his support for Liberal leader Sussan Ley. Recently, Hastie has been vocal on various policy issues, leading to speculation about his alignment with Ley. Speaking on 2GB radio, he emphasised his intent to unify the Liberal Party, stating his comments reflect public concerns and key challenges facing Australians.

“I support Sussan; anyone suggesting otherwise is being mischievous,” Hastie asserted, noting that his primary focus is on preventing fragmentation within the party. He expressed concern over the rising support for One Nation and other minor parties, asserting that a divided right plays into Labor’s hands.

Hastie also articulated his stance on significant policies, including his belief that net zero emissions targets could harm Australia and that current immigration levels are too high, affecting housing access for young Australians. His recent social media activity, including a provocative Instagram post implying a feeling of alienation in Australia, has attracted attention and intensified speculation about his ambitions.

Despite his more forward stance on policy matters, Hastie maintains that he remains committed to the Liberal frontbench and is merely advocating for bolder policy positions that resonate with voters. “I’m still part of the team. I’m just being bolder in our policy discussions,” he affirmed.

Hastie believes the Liberal Party must evolve, abandoning outdated perspectives that may have served it in the past. He pointed out that societal conditions have drastically changed since the eras of former leaders John Howard and Peter Costello, citing global events such as the financial crisis, Brexit, the rise of China under Xi Jinping, the Trump administration, and the pandemic as transformative factors that necessitate a shift in the party’s approach.

In summary, Hastie insists his recent remarks are aimed at strengthening the Liberal Party during challenging times, rather than indicating any ambition to challenge the party leadership. He argues that adapting to contemporary issues is crucial if the party hopes to remain relevant and cohesive.
