Kermit the Frog highlighted the challenges of transitioning from college to the real world during the University of Maryland’s graduation ceremony for the class of 2025, held on Thursday evening (Friday AEST). The beloved Muppet imparted wisdom to graduates, encouraging them to embrace life alongside others rather than competing against them.

Kermit’s appearance as the commencement speaker was announced in March, reflecting his long-standing connection to the university, particularly as the creator of the Muppets, Jim Henson, graduated from Maryland in 1960. Henson, who crafted the original Kermit puppet from his mother’s coat, left a lasting legacy, with a bronze statue of the pair seated together featured prominently on campus.

During the ceremony, Kermit advised graduates on the value of collaboration, stating, “Rather than jumping over someone to get what you want, consider reaching out your hand and taking the leap side-by-side, because life is better when we leap together.” His message resonated with attendees, especially considering the current climate of economic instability and political chaos.

Described in a video as an environmental advocate and international superstar, Kermit has established himself as a champion for creativity, kindness, and believing in the impossible. The university’s president, Darryll J. Pines, expressed enthusiasm for having Kermit deliver insights at such a pivotal moment in the graduates’ lives.

Kermit’s heartfelt address underscored the importance of optimism and connection as the new graduates embark on the next chapter of their lives amidst uncertainty.
