Melbourne Storm’s Ryan Papenhuyzen remains optimistic about playing in the season opener against the Parramatta Eels, despite coach Craig Bellamy describing him as “doubtful” for Round 1 due to ongoing knee and ankle concerns. The 26-year-old fullback missed both of Melbourne’s pre-season trials, leading to Bellamy’s comments about his fitness. However, Papenhuyzen disputes this assessment, suggesting that his coach’s portrayal of his condition is exaggerated.

During a recent episode of the 167 Podcast with teammates Jahrome Hughes and Cameron Munster, Papenhuyzen stated that he believes he is a “massive chance” to take the field. He cheekily called out Bellamy’s comments, clarifying that only his knee has been an issue, attributing the discomfort to a small meniscus tear and some irritation from his knee surgery—rather than an ankle problem.

“I had a little tear in my meniscus and while that’s all good now, I’ve got some calcified stitching from my knee surgery that’s causing a bit of irritation,” he explained. Papenhuyzen has been participating in training sessions, which he believes puts him on track for a comeback. However, he acknowledged that his recovery has been challenging and described it as a “day-by-day” process.

As he continues to manage his condition, he hopes to receive the all-clear soon. Should he be unavailable to play, it is expected that young talent Sua Faalogo will step in, having recently recovered from a hamstring injury. Additionally, Melbourne will be without Nelson Asofa-Solomona for the first two matches due to suspension, which also sidelined him during last year’s grand final against Penrith.

Papenhuyzen’s determination to return to the field underscores his commitment to the team and the upcoming season, as he navigates the ups and downs of recovery while injecting a dose of humour into the situation with his playful critique of Bellamy’s approach.
