A notable Democrat in Congress, Jamie Raskin, has formally requested that the White House physician administer a cognitive test to Donald Trump. Raskin expressed concerns that Trump has been displaying symptoms akin to dementia and cognitive deterioration. He noted growing alarm among the public regarding Trump’s mental fitness, particularly as his recent speeches have become increasingly erratic and aggressive.
Raskin’s letter highlighted incidents of Trump’s incoherent remarks, describing his behaviour as volatile and threatening, raising questions about his capacity to serve as President. He advocated for a thorough cognitive evaluation, insisting that Congress should be informed of the results.
The criticism from Raskin included a specific incident where Trump appeared to struggle while descending the White House stairs, further illustrating his perceived decline. Raskin pointed out that Trump now shares the same age as Biden did at a similar stage in his presidency, a time when questions about Biden’s cognitive abilities were rampant.
In response, a White House spokesperson dismissed Raskin’s claims, labelling him a “lightweight” and suggesting that Trump’s vigour and engagement starkly contrast with Biden’s perceived struggles. The spokesperson accused Democrats of previously downplaying Biden’s mental and physical health issues.
Raskin’s mention of the 25th Amendment indicated his belief that a significant segment of the government should assess the President’s ability to perform his duties. He provocatively questioned how the mechanism might be invoked to remove Trump from office, likening Trump’s communication style to that of an unhinged comic book villain.
Despite the controversy, Trump has undergone multiple cognitive assessments in the past year, often boasting about the positive outcomes of these tests. Raskin, who gained prominence during Trump’s second impeachment and the investigation into the January 6 insurrection, continues to be a leading voice in scrutinising Trump’s presidency.
As political tensions heighten around the issue of cognitive fitness in leadership, Raskin’s appeal for a cognitive assessment reflects broader concerns within the legislative sphere regarding the mental acuity of those in high office.
