NSW Blues coach Laurie Daley has expressed confidence in Cameron Munster as he takes over the role of Maroons captain, following the surprising decision by coach Billy Slater to drop long-time skipper Daly Cherry-Evans for the upcoming Origin II. Munster’s promotion marks a significant shift, with Cherry-Evans becoming the first Maroons captain to be sidelined mid-season in almost three decades.

During an interview on Nine’s Today, Daley stated that the added responsibility would motivate Munster to excel even further. He highlighted that Munster, who grew up admiring rugby league legends such as Wally Lewis, would find inspiration in leading his state in the crucial No.6 jersey.

In Cherry-Evans’ absence, the Cowboys’ Tom Dearden will step in at half-back. Daley noted that the new pairing of Munster and Dearden poses a formidable challenge for opponents, particularly praising Dearden’s dynamic playing style that consistently tests defensive units.

Blues legend Phil Gould weighed in on the decision, suggesting that Cherry-Evans’ drop was premature, yet acknowledged that Munster was a logical choice for captaincy. Gould highlighted that Slater appeared uncertain following Origin I, realising that changes were necessary for the team’s improvement.

While acknowledging Slater’s authority to make bold decisions, Gould stated his belief that Cherry-Evans’ experience and leadership skills were still needed at this stage. He expressed support for Slater but personally would not have made the same choice at this time. Nevertheless, he conceded that Slater’s decision could ultimately prove to be the right one.

Gould also noted that the captaincy would likely enhance Munster’s performance and leadership on the field, given his extensive experience alongside notable players such as Cherry-Evans, Cameron Smith, and Johnathan Thurston. This move is expected to help Munster refocus and elevate his contributions to the game.

Overall, while opinions on Slater’s decision vary, the emphasis remains on the potential for Munster to rise to the occasion and lead the Maroons effectively in the upcoming clash.
