This afternoon, Melbourne’s CBD is set to witness a significant protest, with hundreds of demonstrators rallying to advocate for either the defunding or complete abolition of both state and federal police in Victoria. Scheduled to commence around 4.30pm, the protest coincides with peak hour traffic, potentially amplifying its visibility and impact.

The activists align with a growing movement that has gained momentum in the United States, advocating for the reallocation of police funding towards community programs aimed at addressing crime more holistically. While some demonstrators push for defunding, others call for the more radical step of dismantling police forces altogether, highlighting the diversity of goals within the movement.

Victoria Police has confirmed its awareness of the planned protest, emphasising its commitment to facilitating peaceful demonstrations while ensuring community safety. “We will have a visible presence to keep the peace and ensure the safety of the community,” a police spokesperson stated. They also articulated a respect for lawful protests but urged participants to remain peaceful and avoid disrupting the broader public.

Recent protests in Melbourne have seen escalated tensions, with violent clashes occurring just weeks ago, on April 27. During that incident, opposing factions engaged in confrontations that resulted in missiles being thrown at police, injuring four officers. Authorities responded by making multiple arrests, including one individual for unlawful assault and another for violent conduct against police.

As today’s protest unfolds, the focus will not only be on the voices advocating for police reform but also on maintaining public order amid potential tensions, as both police and protestors navigate this complex socio-political landscape.
