Ali France, the newly elected Member for Dickson, recently recounted her remarkable journey to victory over Peter Dutton, a formidable political opponent, in the May federal election. Reflecting on her ascent, which she described as a “seven-year mountain climb,” France emphasised the profound impact of her late son, Henry, who bravely battled terminal leukaemia. She termed his resilience as “instrumental” in motivating her during the campaign.

In her inaugural speech to the House of Representatives, France, the first amputee in parliament, detailed her personal trials, including an accident that resulted in the loss of her leg, the PTSD that followed, and the shift in public perception about her capabilities. She conveyed that her story transcended mere tragedy or triumph, representing a broader human experience. France articulated the unlikelihood of her success in Dickson, where she faced significant challenges as a single mother advocating for change amidst political giants.

She shared the heart-wrenching memory of caring for Henry during his final nights, expressing gratitude for the precious moments they shared. In her speech, she recalled his encouragement, urging her to pursue her aspirations and not use his illness as a reason to stagnate. France recognised his spirit as a guiding force throughout her campaign, attributing her victory to his belief in her potential.

France, whose political roots trace back to her grandmother’s activism, underscored the barriers confronting people with disabilities, advocating for the need to shift societal perspectives. Despite her efforts, she faced difficulties securing employment due to the stigma surrounding her disability and noted that her past experience became overshadowed by her accident.

She expressed her appreciation for the sports and supportive communities that played pivotal roles in rebuilding her confidence, along with heartfelt thanks to her partner, surviving son, and supporters for their encouragement. During her speech, other Labor MPs, including Sarah Witty, also shared emotional narratives, highlighting personal challenges and triumphs.

France’s story resonates as a testament to resilience, human spirit, and the intertwining of personal and public struggles, reinforcing the belief that overcoming adversity is possible through support, determination, and an unwavering commitment to one’s goals.
