Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the dismissal of Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, attributing the decision partly to her handling of the recent catastrophic Palisades wildfire—the most destructive in California’s history. Bass stated that this action was taken in the interest of public safety and the effective operation of the Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD). Although Crowley is removed from her chief position, she will continue to serve in a reduced role within the department.

The Palisades fire, which ignited on January 7, burned nearly 24,000 acres, leading to the tragic deaths of 12 individuals and extensive property damage. Criticism arose after assertions that firefighters were not deployed promptly and evacuation orders were delayed. Crowley defended her actions, emphasising her commitment to firefighter welfare and underscoring the impact of a significant budget cut on departmental operations.

Amidst external pressure, Bass also faced backlash for being overseas during the blaze. Crowley’s refusal to cooperate fully with an investigation into the fire sparked further tension between her and the mayor. Following her removal, some local leaders expressed support for Crowley, with concerns about accountability and budget constraints being highlighted. Bass has appointed former Chief Deputy Ronnie Villanueva as interim fire chief and plans to seek a permanent replacement.
