In a thrilling contest at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night, the Brisbane Broncos overcame the Dolphins 20-12 amidst challenging, rainy conditions, securing local bragging rights. The sold-out crowd witnessed an exciting match filled with impressive plays and fierce tackles, with the Broncos successfully fending off the Dolphins’ attempts to clinch a victory.

Gehamat Shibasaki made a significant impact, scoring two tries and solidifying his case for a regular spot in the starting lineup. Broncos legend and board member Darren Lockyer praised Shibasaki’s strong start to the season during the commentary. Brisbane took control early, with Shibasaki scoring the first try after a clever play orchestrated by Ben Hunt, followed closely by Cory Paix’s try as he broke through the Dolphins’ defence.

The Dolphins responded in the 19th minute with a try from Max Plath, thanks to a pass from Felise Kaufusi. However, Staggs soon extended the Broncos’ lead by muscling over the line, dramatically reminding Dolphins fans that Suncorp Stadium is firmly under Broncos territory.

The Broncos entered halftime with a comfortable 16-6 lead, despite Jordan Riki facing scrutiny for a high tackle on Jack Bostock, who later returned to play after a head injury assessment.

In the second half, Shibasaki quickly added another try, continuing the momentum for Brisbane. Although the Dolphins managed to score through Jake Averillo’s dynamic run, it was not enough to turn the tide. Shibasaki was later named Player of the Match for his outstanding performance, while Tom Gilbert was also put on report during the second period.

Amidst the rain, the match showcased the Broncos’ resilience and teamwork, setting a strong tone early in the season as they eye greater achievements ahead.
