The renowned Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea has reopened to visitors following extensive negotiations between the local landowners and the government. This comes after several months of protests that resulted in the cancellation of treks for Australian tourists and led to many being left in limbo.

Despite the reopening, local communities hold the power to restrict access to the track unexpectedly. The Australian government’s Smartraveller website has issued a warning for tourists to maintain a “high degree of caution” when travelling to PNG, citing high incidences of crime, violence, and civil unrest as significant concerns.

Specific areas that may pose additional risks include Mount Hagen and the Southern Highlands, along with the Hela and Enga provinces. Furthermore, ongoing fuel shortages have the potential to disrupt domestic travel, including air transportation, with little warning.

Local authorities have acknowledged the presence of criminal groups operating in remote regions, particularly within the Highlands. These groups may engage in unlawful activities, including kidnapping for ransom, with foreign nationals being potential targets.

The disputes that led to the track’s prior closure had caused several tour operators in Australia to cancel multiple trekking expeditions. In light of the renewed access, the Australian government urges tourists to stay updated with their tour companies for the latest information regarding travel safety and conditions.

Each year, thousands of Australians embark on the Kokoda Track, which holds historical significance as the site of fierce combat between Australian forces and Japanese troops during World War II. This influx of visitors is vital for bolstering the local economy through tourism.
