King Charles III’s Canadian Visit Highlights Its Sovereignty in Relation to Trump

In light of former President Trump’s controversial remarks about the U.S. potentially annexing Canada, Prime Minister Mark Carney has invited King Charles III to deliver the speech from the throne, outlining his government’s agenda for the new parliamentary session. This marks a notable moment, as the monarch traditionally serves as the head of state in Canada, reminiscent of his role in Australia, both being members of the Commonwealth.

Carney emphasised the significance of this occasion, asserting it reflects Canada’s strong historical links and unique identity, shaped by its English, French, and Indigenous roots. He, along with Canada’s first Indigenous Governor-General, Mary Simon, will welcome the King and Queen Camilla, alongside an honour guard from the Royal Canadian Dragoons, a regiment for which Charles serves as Colonel-in-Chief.

King Charles’ visit is intended to accentuate Canada’s constitutional monarchy and its journey towards independence, reinforcing the nation’s distinct identity compared to the U.S. Rather unusually, the King will be reading the speech from the throne, a task performed by his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, only twice during her reign.

The visits of the Royal family remind Canadians of their unique history, especially in the context of their long-standing separation from American governance post-Revolution. Former Quebec Premier Jean Charest pointed out that this event highlights Canada’s narrative, which is different from that of its American neighbour.

While generally indifferent to the monarchy, Canadians have recently expressed discontent over diplomatic gestures made towards Trump, particularly as he has publicly threatened Canada’s sovereignty. The new U.S. ambassador to Canada, Pete Hoekstra, has advocated for moving past discussions about potential annexation, suggesting that there are more appropriate channels for diplomatic communications.

Royal historian Carolyn Harris noted that this visit is likely to draw the attention of Trump, given his known admiration for the royal family. She remarked on the distinctiveness of Canada’s history, particularly the arrival of loyalists post-American Revolution.

In addition to delivering the speech, King Charles is expected to engage in various Canadian ceremonies, which include a ceremonial puck drop during a street hockey game and a meeting with Prime Minister Carney. Queen Camilla, meanwhile, will be sworn in as a Canadian privy councillor, allowing her to provide advisement regarding Canadian affairs.

Following this visit, King Charles will return to the UK after fulfilling his engagements, including a visit to Canada’s National War Memorial. The trip is anticipated to further emphasise Canada’s individuality and the strengthened bonds within the Commonwealth.
