King Charles III is scheduled to host former US President Donald Trump at Windsor Castle during Trump’s upcoming state visit to the UK from September 17 to 19. Buckingham Palace has confirmed that Trump and his wife Melania have accepted the invitation.
The prospect of Trump’s visit was hinted at back in February when UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer extended the invitation to him during a state dinner at the White House. Starmer remarked that this occasion was unprecedented, and upon receiving the invitation, Trump responded affirmatively.
While specific details regarding the visit are yet to be revealed, it marks a notable first: it is the only instance in history where an elected official has been granted a second state visit to the UK, following Trump’s visit in 2019 when he met with the late Queen Elizabeth II. This visit was not without its controversies; for instance, Trump received criticism for walking in front of the Queen during their meeting.
US Ambassador to the UK, Peter Mandelson, expressed his belief that Trump would be warmly welcomed during this visit, indicating that Trump has a fondness for Britain and the royal family. Mandelson stated, “He should expect a warm reception because he really does love Britain. He hugely admires it.” He also mentioned that Trump has a level of trust in Starmer and emphasised the importance of demonstrating respect rather than sycophancy.
Throughout his presidency and beyond, Trump has shown appreciation for the British monarchy, often mentioning it favourably on his social media platforms. His previous interactions with royal family members, including the late Queen, have contributed to his positive rapport with the institution.
As the visit approaches, anticipation builds regarding the discussions and engagements planned during Trump’s stay, although full specifics are still undisclosed.
